Reaching Out To Stranded Migrant Workers With Sneher Paras App

Brandsum has been closely associated with The Government of West Bengal, prominently through the state’s initiatives like, Bengal Global Summit, KIFF and various other digital campaigns and promotions. So as the ministry planned for an online platform to extend help for the state’s stranded migrant workers during the COVID-19 lockdown, they approached the agency to help them reach out to the stranded workers through an app.

The brief:

The West Bengal Government wanted to provide Coronavirus relief to all migrants who are stranded in some other state under the WB Migrant Worker Relief Scheme.

The ministry wanted the team at Brandsum to enable the launch of the Sneher Paras App, which will provide monetary help to all labourers who are stuck in different states of India away from their homes.

Challenge

Given the fact that the Coronavirus pandemic and the aligned nationwide lockdowns had stranded the state’s migrant workers in different parts of India, an app backend system that can locate, identify and extend help, had to be developed within no time. But the biggest challenge for the agency was to handle the huge numbers of app usages and form submission data received post launch.

Strategy

The team at Brandsum brainstormed a seamless UI and Navigation that will help the government track, locate and capture the data of stranded migrant workers using the device’s GPS and help them register, apply and access government relief funds easily.

Execution

The primary objective in this project was to keep the interface simple and intuitive enough so that the mobile app was easy to use for the target audience – migrant workers. Apart from an easy form submission process, Google Maps API was integrated to fetch accurate location information of the migrant workers. The app also featured Location Cased State Boundary Restrictions, which would help the agency and the associates identify the exact location of a migrant worker for true disbursement of relief. Lumen database was used which made connecting with databases and running queries extremely simple at both ends.

Results

Despite working remotely, the team at Brandsum managed to launch the app on 20th April after rigorous A/B testing on April 20th, 2020 within 4 days of receiving the brief, which led to ensure that the migrant labourers receive the most required monetary help during this lockdown as they cannot earn wages.

The app was an instant success with the stranded migrant workers and received 190153 downloads within 2 days and has since been used by 1975125 migrant labourers to access relief from the state.
